On November 12 and 13, 2025, the municipality of Rafelguaraf, Spain, hosted the second European Democracy Weekend event, bringing together international participants in a meeting dedicated to promoting democratic values, civic participation, and understanding of local governance in the European context.
The event was attended by local and regional institutional representatives, with the opening session taking place at the headquarters of the Rafelguaraf City Council. The official reception included speeches by Rafaela Aliaga Sendra, Mayor, as well as members of the local executive, including Miguel Ángel Pons Oltra, Deputy Mayor, and Jeniffer Navarro Boluda, Spokesperson for Youth and Housing. The Mayor of La Pobla Llarga, Neus Garrigues Calatayud, was also present. During the session, the importance of the role of local authorities in promoting democratic participation, especially among younger generations, was highlighted.
Throughout the first day, participants had the opportunity to learn about local best practices, including a visit to the municipality’s nursery and primary school, where teachers presented educational initiatives that promote civic participation from childhood, as well as European projects already implemented and prospects for future cooperation. The program also included a workshop dedicated to democratic values in Spain, addressing decision-making methods, the functioning of the electoral system, and the importance of empathy and dialogue through participatory activities and role-play exercises. The day ended with a networking dinner, promoting cultural exchange and informal contact between participants.
On the second day, the focus was on the link between democracy, culture, and the local community. Participants learned about the Fallas tradition, meeting local entrepreneurs responsible for its construction and assembly, and reflecting on the importance of this cultural event for community cohesion. The program also included meetings with local producers, during which topics such as territorial development, sustainability, and the impact of the 2024 floods on the economy and community resilience were discussed.
The meeting ended with a reflection and sharing session, in which participants highlighted the importance of European exchange, civic engagement, and the role of local communities in consolidating democracy. The initiative reinforced the partners’ commitment to continue promoting intercultural dialogue and active participation in democratic life at the local and European levels.
